| What Is Metadata?
| Metadata is any data that describes the content or characteristics of a file.
Most computer users are already accustomed to viewing very basic metadata through the “
File Info” or “Document Properties” box found in many software applications.
| | What Is XMP?
| The Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is an open-source labeling technology developed by Adobe
Systems for reading and writing comprehensive metadata. With XMP, desktop applications and
back-end publishing systems gain a common method for capturing, sharing, and leveraging valuable
metadata — essentially “plowing the ground” for more efficient job processing,
workflow automation, rights management, and digital asset repurposing. With an XMP-enabled application,
information about a project can be captured during the content creation process and embedded within the
file and into a content management system. Meaningful descriptions and titles, searchable keywords, and
up-to-date author, copyright and licensing information can be captured in a format that is understood
by both users and software applications.
| | Who Uses MetaGrove And What Does MetaGrove Do?
| The MetaGrove toolkit can be used in many different ways. Our customers range from museums to large
publishers and manufacturers. MetaGrove provides powerful tools to capture data and embed the data inside the image file or other
digital asset. Our software operates as an Adobe Plug-In and is invoked as a menu
item from within the Adobe application.
| | How Does A Digital Asset Management System (DAM) Work With MetaGrove?
| First, one needs to make sure the DAM can ingest the XMP you are embedding in the digital asset. Second, each
DAM handles the ingestion of XMP differently. Most DAMs have require a mapping file that is consistent with
a schema created with MetaGrove. Pound Hill Software publishes a list on its website that shows which DAMs we know
ingest XMP. However, please check with your DAM representative to verify if your DAM is able to ingest XMP.
| | What Are The Benefits Of Using MetaGrove And XMP?
| Because MetaGrove is located within the Adobe application our customers are able to save time and money because
it is much simpler to access the User Interface to enter data. Many of our customers buy our product for
the simple fact that they don’t have to open another application to capture the data or see the data another
person has captured. The following is an example of how a large printer might benefit from using MetaGrove and XMP.
Given a large printer company with many vendors, with each vendor handling the image and needing to update and view that
image document's status as it passes from one vendor to another. As the image moves through the workflow towards the printer,
or whatever its final destination might be, the XMP metadata is added to the image document. This process adds value to
the document itself if the document is to be archived, it adds control and therefore efficiency to the workflow, and it creates
a safety net for the printer. The printer can confirm where the image has been and what exactly the image is and how it should be printed.
The image may be a bowl of apples. In the image the apples are green, but the data that has been embedded in the image
indicates the apples should be red and not only red but a specific tone of red. Thus, the XMP in the asset informs
the printer what changes will need to occur before the printer makes a mistake which would incur a large cost and lose precious time
that might be needed to make a deadline.
| | How Is MetaGrove Priced?
| Most companies will need only a one MetaGrove Developer application license to create their schema and User Interface.
The MetaGrove Plug-Ins are priced on a per workstation and per Adobe application basis. As an example, if a company needs to develop a
MetaGrove custom schema and User Interface, and will use ten workstations to add XMP metadata using Adobe Illustrator, that company would
need to purchase a license for a single MetaGrove Developer application and a MetaGrove Plug-in for Illustrator license for each of the
workstations for a total of ten MetaGrove for Adobe Illustrator licenses plus one license for MetaGrove Developer.
Those companies requring bulk purchases, site licenses, or enterprise wide licenses for MetaGrove Developer or the MetaGrove Plug-Ins
should contact the Sales Department at Pound Hill Software.
| | Is MetaGrove Compatible With Adobe Bridge?
| Yes. MetaGrove produces XMP Templates that are compatible with Adobe FIle InfoTemplates.
Bridge, and other Adobe applications that support Fiile Info templates can read and apply the MetaGrove XMP templates.
